Healthy work practices with a tablet? It is possible!

There are no restrictions with a tablet, you can work anywhere. Whether you are in the train or on the couch, you can easily check your documents. Working flexibly brings so much variety and movement with it. You would think this would be good news! But there is also a downside: ergonomic problems can arise with long-term tablet use. Read on to learn how this happens and what you can do about it.

Low screen, high strain 

When working with a tablet, the head is bent forward. The lower the position of the screen, the greater the strain on the neck. In addition, the wrist and hand adopt an unnatural posture. These factors quickly lead to neck complaints and increased muscle tension in the wrist and the hand. In other words: RSI complaints.

Continually holding a tablet is another factor that causes strain. The tablet is often held in one hand, in a sort of pincer grip, while the other hand touches the screen. Although a tablet does not weigh much, the strain on the arm, wrist, hand, shoulder and neck can be too high. Long-term tablet use results in strain complaints.

The legibility of the screen also has an influence. Tablets often have a high resolution, glossy screen. The effect: a lot of reflection and smaller characters. In the longer term, this leads to eye complaints and loss of performance. Did you know that you read more slowly from a screen than from paper?

 

Pay attention to the way you use your tablet 

These 6 ergonomic tips guarantee a better posture, high productivity and good screen legibility:

  1. Maintain an upright posture. Keep your head directly above your body.
  2. Do not hold the tablet in your hand or on your lap.
  3. Raise the screen and tilt it at least 45 ° during use.
  4. Do not use a tablet for longer than 30 minutes. Take regular, short breaks.
  5. When using the tablet for less than 2 hours per day, use a tablet raiser, and an external keyboard and mouse.
  6. When using the tablet for more than 2 hours per day, always use a separate screen and separate plug-in devices.

Ergonomic tools

There are handy tools available that enable you to raise your tablet. At a fixed office workstation, use a monitor arm with a tablet holder. This enables you to set the tablet screen at eye level which stimulates an upright, working posture.

For mobile tablet use, the familiar foldable tablet covers are a major bonus. The big advantage is that you always have it with you. With prolonged tablet use (more than 30 minutes) a tablet cover is inadequate, you still need to look down. There are also tablet raisers on the market that can set your tablet at eye level. These are sometimes adjustable and easily portable. Just like a monitor raiser, it ensures that you automatically adopt an upright working posture. This means you can work on your tablet for longer but be mindful of the advice which recommends limiting usage to a maximum of 2 hours per day. With all these options, you minimise your chances of getting RSI complaints by using a separate keyboard and mouse.
