Split typing a hype, or not?

Chances are that as you read this there is a standard keyboard on your desktop. Although there are many different variants on the market, most people indeed still use a standard straight keyboard, a keyboard based on an 1878 design by Christopher Latham Sholes.

Pains caused by keyboard

Did you know that the design of your keyboard can lead to discomfort and pain when used intensively? Over the past 60 years, fortunately, there has been increasing evidence and recognition that prolonged typing is related to pain in the hand, arm, shoulder, and neck. Besides the intensity and number of hours of screen work, unfavourable postures and movements also have a major influence. Unfavourable postures such as typing with twisted wrists and raised hands are directly related to the design of the conventional, upright keyboard.

Different keyboards designs

Therefore, the effect of different keyboard designs on the above complaints has long been the focus of attention and research. Those who think the split keyboard is a new hype are wrong. The first design for a split keyboard was patented by F. Heidner as early as 1915!
